Binaural Audio
Why Headphones?
Binaural audio is a format of recording and playback of sound in a way that preserves spatial information. To experience this most effectively, you will need to deliver the left and right channels of the audio to each ear individually. This can only be accomplished using headphones or earphones. Stereo speakers will deliver an approximate effect.
When we listen to the world around us, our brains receive two separate audio signals from each ear - the left and the right. Binaural recording techniques capture the audio entering each ear. This preserves the relative position of any given sound source with respect to the listener or binaural microphone.
This piece is a trailer to a longer, 30 minute piece made with binaurally captured audio from Scotland and the Netherlands.
To experience the spatialisation effect, any pair of stereo headphones are necessary. No special equipment needed.
